Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH)

2.1 billion people lack safely managed drinking water • 3.4 billion people lack safely managed sanitation, and 354 million practice open defecation. • 1.7 billion lack basic hygiene services at home, including 611 million with no handwashing facility at all. • Unsafe WASH caused millions of deaths in the last five years • Among children under five, unsafe WASH caused 395,000 deaths, including 273,000 from diarrhea. • A girl in Ethiopia making an eight-hour round trip to fetch five litres of water. • People in least developed countries are more than twice as likely to lack basic drinking water and sanitation.   When water is far away or unsafe, children miss school, women lose hours that could go to earning an income, and families drink contaminated water out of necessity. Contaminated water drives diarrhoea, cholera, and typhoid, which are especially deadly for malnourished children. Walking long distances also exposes women and girls to the risk of violence.

Food Security

645 million people faced hunger in 2025 • 2.7 billion people cannot afford a healthy diet. • Africa now has about 309 million hungry people, more than Asia’s 292 million. • 4.9 million children died before age five in 2024. For the first time, UN estimates attribute more than 100,000 of those deaths directly to severe acute malnutrition. • Malnutrition is also an underlying factor in a much larger share of child deaths. UNICEF links it to almost half of all under-five deaths, roughly 3 million a year, by weakening children’s ability to survive common illnesses. War & Displacement • Sudan: Nearly 19.5 million people, two in five, face acute food insecurity. Risk of famine has been identified in 14 areas across Darfur and South Kordofan. 825,000 children under five are expected to suffer severe acute malnutrition in 2026. • Yemen: One in two people in government-controlled areas faces high levels of acute food insecurity, with a collapsing economy compounding the conflict. 23.1 million people need humanitarian aid in 2026. • Syria: 16.5 million people need humanitarian aid. • Wider region: In South Sudan, 7.8 million people face high levels of acute food insecurity, and in Somalia, 6 million. Conflict destroys farms, markets, and roads, and displaced families lose their land, tools, and income. A child with severe malnutrition can decline in weeks.

Orphan Sponsorship

140 million children have lost one or both parents globally • 273 million children and youth worldwide are out of school, the seventh straight annual rise. • 258 million school-age children have their education disrupted by crises. 93 million of them are completely out of school.   Most children counted in global orphan figures have lost one parent. Many still live with a surviving parent or relatives who cannot afford to feed, clothe, or school them. That is why sponsorship works best as support for the child and the caregiving household. Orphaned children are more likely to skip meals, drop out of school to work, and face exploitation, early marriage, and the loss of a stable home.
